Nan Zhou is a Staff Scientist and the Deputy Group Leader of the China Energy Group of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. In addition, since 2010 Dr. Zhou served as the Deputy Director of the U.S.-China Clean Energy Center-Building Energy Efficiency (CERC-BEE). In October 2012 she assumed the Director position for CERC-BEE. She has driven this program to meet challenging milestones while engaging with a complex joint U.S.-China stakeholder matrix and facilitated creation of a research program portfolio to focus on breakthrough energy efficiency building technologies. Nan is also selected to be the Co-Chair of 2016 Buildings Summer Study of American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) and Committee Member of China Green Building Council (China GBC) from 2015, and the Member of the Balaton Group from 2014. In November 2015, she is appointed as the Advisory Board Member of Asia Pacific Research Centre under APEC. Also noteworthy, Nan Zhou received recognition at the 2016 C3E Awards, as a finalist for mid-career women’s leadership and achievement.
Nan Zhou has also co-initiated and is managing three major programs between LBNL and Chinese organizations: the LBNL-Shenzhen Institute for Buildings Research (IBR) Joint Program on Sustainable Communities, the LBNL Energy Efficiency Training Program for Chinese Industries, and the Tongji University-LBNL-University of California-Berkeley joint PostDoc Program.
Dr. Zhou’ s research has focused on modeling and evaluating China’s low-carbon development strategies, assessing building energy efficiency policies and technologies, and development and evaluation of China's appliance standards and labeling program. Additional work includes energy efficiency in industry; and assessments of energy efficiency policies.
Her more recent work involves leading the development of guidebooks and software tools for local governments in China to create low carbon and eco-development plans, as well as providing training to policy makers, mayors and practitioners in China on energy efficiency and low carbon development, assessing the current energy situation in China and forecasting the low carbon future outlook for the critical period extending to 2050, providing technical assistance in development, enforcement, and evaluation of the Appliance Standard and Labeling program in China, and providing policy recommendations for microgrid development.
Dr. Zhou’s work assists the Chinese government in connecting high level policy goals—energy security, economic growth, equity, etc.—with changes in energy investment, supply, and efficiency. She collaborates with and provides technical assistance to diverse governmental and non-governmental organizations in the U.S. and the world on energy efficiency, climate change mitigation, and related topics. She has worked to expand knowledge and awareness internationally of China’s energy efficiency policies and programs.
Dr. Zhou has a total of more than one hundred publications, with more than 30 referred journal articles on buildings and energy.
Dr. Zhou has an architecture degree from Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, a Masters in Architecture from Kyushu University in Japan, and a PhD in Engineering from Kyushu Sangyo University, Japan. Prior to LBNL, she was an assistant professor in the Department of Architecture, Kyushu Sangyo University, and an assistant professor of Department of Environment Engineering, University of Kitakyushu, Japan.
