Dr. Essel Ben Hagan is the Director of the Institute of Industrial Research, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Accra, Ghana. The Institute undertakes research and development, consultancy services, and transfer of proven industrial technologies to support Ghana's industrial sector, particularly small and medium-scale enterprises. Dr. Hagan is also the President of Ghana Institution of Engineers, and holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Energy Demand Analysis and Modeling). Dr. Essel Ben Hagan has been a key resource person in several programs of Ghana's Ministry of Energy and the Energy Commission on biomass energy technologies and policy for about 20 years. He has also provided similar professional services to the World Bank, UNDP, UNCHS (Habitat), UNESCO and DANNIDA. He is also a co-author of a book entitled “Biomass Conversion and Technology” which is used internationally as one of the textbooks of the UNESCO Energy Engineering Series. He is also a Member of the Editorial Board of Environmental Research Letters, an open-access journal on environmental science.
