The penetration of variable sources of renewable energy (RE) is projected to increase significantly in the U.S., requiring greater electric system flexibility to ensure grid reliability. This seminar will introduce an optimization model that determines the least-cost U.S. electric system (investment and production of generators, storage, and transmission) for high RE futures and then proposes to extend this model to include demand response (DR) for additional flexibility. The proposed research seeks to quantify the change in value of DR with increasing RE penetrations and determine how to design DR programs to maximize the value of DR for high RE futures.
