The Science Behind EPA's Proposed Revisions to the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for Ozone (O3) and Particulate Matter

May 17, 1997 - 12:00pm
Seminar Host/Point of Contact:

Most scientific studies that are relevant to the setting of the NAAQS were not designed or performed with that specific application in mind, resulting in bits and pieces of the overall puzzle.  Despite these limitations, the particulate matter (PM) and O3 literature reviews and analyses in the recently issued EPA Criteria documents and staff papers are the best prepared and most comprehensive ever available to an EPA Administrator as a basis for NAAQS decisions.  This seminar will discuss the scientific basis for the NAAQS revisions, including relevant research from NYU.  Research needs on important unresolved issues will also be discussed so that NAAQS revisions can be better targeted at the most biologically active components of PM and at the interactive relationships between O3 and PM on human health.
