Tianzhen Hong is a Computational Research Scientist and PI with the Simulation Research Group. He is a registered mechanical engineer in California and a LEED accredited professional. His research focuses on methods and tools for design, operation, maintenance, and human behavior to achieve low energy buildings and sustainable urban systems. He is leading the EnergyPlus development at LBNL, was the chief developer and product manager of VisualDOE version 4.0 (a GUI to DOE-2.1E), and was the founding developer of DeST (former BTP, a building energy simulation program). He is leading a research area of Building Energy Performance Monitoring, Simulation, and Human Behavior under the U.S. – China Clean Energy Research Center for Building Energy Efficiency. He is an editorial board member of the Journal of Building Simulation. He is one of the two operating agents of the new IEA EBC Annex 66: Definition and Simulation of Occupant Behavior in Buildings. He is a member of ASHRAE (voting member of SSPC 140 and 205) and IBPSA. He received his B.Eng., M.Eng. and Ph.D. in HVACR from Tsinghua University, China. Before joining LBNL, he worked for Architectural Energy Corporation in San Francisco, Supersymmetry in Singapore, National University of Singapore, and Tsinghua University in Beijing.
