Dr. Kirchstetter is a Staff Scientist in the Energy Analysis & Environmental Impacts Division and Leader of the Sustainable Energy Systems Group. He holds a concurrent appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor in Civil & Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley. His research focus is air pollution, with an emphasis on environmental impacts of particulate matter. He has authored over 65 refereed journal articles and his current research interests include:
• Air pollutant emissions and controls, emphasizing the transportation sector
• Atmospheric aerosols: composition; climate-relevant optical properties; black and brown carbon
• Aerosol measurement technologies: traditional & microelectromechanical; fabrication & evaluation
• Waste-to-energy for greenhouse gas emissions reduction
