Bio

Stephen Selkowitz is a retired Senior Advisor for Building Science, and former Group Leader of the Windows and Envelope Materials Group in the Building Technology and Urban Systems Division. As an internationally recognized expert on window technologies, façade systems, and daylighting, he collaborates with R&D teams worldwide. He is a frequently invited speaker to industrial and professional groups on many aspects of building technologies and commercial building energy efficiency, and is the author/co-author of over 170 publications, 3 books and holds 2 patents. He is the Principal Investigator for the new LBNL program to design and build FLEXLAB®, the Facility for Low Energy Experiments in Buildings. He is a past member of the Board of Directors of the National Fenestration Rating Council and is currently on the advisory board of a number of efficiency initiatives such as the Green Lights Daylighting Program in New York City, and the Zero Emissions Building program in Norway. Before joining LBNL he was a principal in a consulting engineering firm and taught courses in Environmental Controls and Alternative Energy Systems. Selkowitz holds a BA in Physics from Harvard College and an MFA in Environmental Design from California Institute of the Arts.

Awards

2018 Director’s Award for Exceptional Achievement: Technology Transfer -  August 8th 2018

A Living Lab partnership with Goldman Sachs (GS) leveraged LBNL's world-class science to obtain an objective assessment of innovative daylighting and lighting energy efficiency technologies and promote lessons learned strategies throughout the worldwide GS organization and the broader buildings industry.

2014 Engineering News-Record Award of Excellence -  April 3rd 2014

The editors of Engineering News-Record magazine have given Stephen Selkowitz is the 2014 Award of Excellence "for relentlessly working to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings and for moving the nation toward better building performance, as well as for being the master of commercializing energy-efficient building technologies and the mastermind of FLEXLAB®," the Facility for Low-Energy eXperimens in Buildings located at Berkeley Lab.

2012 Berkeley Lab Prize: Lifetime Achievement Award: Societal Impact -  May 25th 2012

Few people in the world have had as big an impact on reducing energy use in buildings as Steve Selkowitz. Buildings account for 40% of the U.S. energy use, and more than 70% of the electricity used in this country — major contributors to global carbon dioxide emissions. As Head of the Building Technologies Department for the past 35 years, Steve has created the leading program in the world in Energy Efficient Building Technologies. Steve has provided the overall scientific vision, coordination, management and leadership of a department with a diverse staff of more than 80 researchers in six major RDD&D activities related to energy use in buildings: commercial building systems, building simulation research, windows and daylighting, lighting systems, demand response research, and applications team...While Steve modestly credits his department with the numerous accomplishments, the truth is he has been the visionary and driving spirit behind much of the work his talented team has produced. Steve Selkowitz is the 'Steve Jobs' in the world of energy-efficient buildings — he has literally changed how we design, build, and inhabit buildings the world over.
