S.S. Krishnan received the MS and PhD in Computer and Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York in 1989 and 1992 respectively. He was a Scientist at The Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, and has worked extensively on major projects with US, European, Japanese and Indian entities in the modeling, analysis and policy aspects of energy efficiency planning, industrial manufacturing, process planning and optimization, automation, knowledge engineering, and process and product modeling domains. The Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Program at CSTEP is working closely with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, Government of India (BEE) to support the policy design and implementation of the PAT mechanism which seeks to improve the energy efficiency of large energy intensive industries. He takes part in industry outreach and stakeholder consultation workshops jointly with the BEE in various locations throughout India. He is also working with several industrial partners in the modeling and analysis of cement, iron and steel, sponge iron, pulp and paper, fertilizer, textiles, aluminium and other sectors in various energy efficiency studies in order to generate actionable methodologies, indicators, and suggestions for effective policy design and implementation. The work involves working with policy makers, and close collaboration with cement industry ranging from actual plant studies, and discussions with plant operators, energy and environment staff and senior management. He works closely with several industrial bodies and has also served on the Industry Working Group of the Planning Commission’s Low Carbon Growth Expert Committee of the Government of India. He has made invited presentations at various workshops and conferences on Industrial energy efficiency organized by the BEE, IEA and several other organizations. He is a life member of the Computer Society of India, and is an elected Senior Member of the IEEE, USA.
