Mona Shirpour joined Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as a postdoctoral fellow in 2011, after completing her Ph.D. in Materials Science at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Germany. Her thesis, supervised by Prof. Joachim Maier, was entitled “Grain boundary characterization of electroceramics: Acceptor- doped BaZrO3, an intermediate temperature proton conductor“. Her primary interests, listed below, lie in fundamental understanding of the transport properties in ionic solids:

  • Electrical and chemical transport properties of solid state ion conductors.
  • Defect chemistry of mixed ionic and electronic conducting materials.
  • Surface / interface related electrochemical properties of thin films.
  • Electrochemistry of materials for energy storage and conversion devices.

Her current research activities include (i) synthesis, structural characterization and electrochemistry of new electrode materials for lithium/sodium ion batteries; (ii) design of new generation of aqueous sodium ion batteries for grid applications; (iii) study of battery materials using synchrotron X-ray techniques; and (iv) defect chemistry of lithium-ion conducting solids.
