Overview of India's Power Sector with a Special Reference to Renewable Energy

India has planned ambitious investments in the power sector (close to ~$1 Trillion) over the next 20 years or so – increasing the current installed generation capacity by nearly 3 times. The country also has fairly aggressive renewable energy targets in the next 10 years (>150GW of grid connected renewable power). In his talk, Mr. Pradhan is going give an overview of the power sector with a focus on renewable energy and will talk in depth about key policies, regulatory mechanisms, markets, key challenges, and future direction. Central Electricity Regulatory Commission is the apex regulatory body in the Indian electricity sector (FERC equivalent) and is key for designing renewable energy procurement policies, transmission planning, grid operations, and electricity market design.
