The building technology industry identifies technology fragmentation as one of the biggest barriers to evaluating and deploying energy efficiency at scale. New technologies are moving away from building automation and metering protocols and seemingly every new hardware solution comes with a cloud-based SaaS app which does not support common protocols. Developing and deploying software applications in the building technology sector is not possible without an operating system for buildings. This has forced current software technology providers to have to depend on selling their solutions almost exclusively to utilities, creating a gap in cost effective offerings accessible to building owners. Solving connectivity and customer on-boarding is necessary to turn on connected buildings and open the market to software innovation.
