PWGSC is the Canadian federal government department tasked with the procurement, operation and maintenance of built facilities housing all federal employees, their agencies and crown corporations (approximately 100 M ft sq for 330,000 employees). PWGSC is currently retrofitting 20,000 ft sq of traditional office space in its Headquarters tower at Place du Portage, Phase 3, Hull, Quebec, to serve as a ”Workplace Performance Laboratory” in order to better respond to the challenges posed by the Department's new corporate strategic initiatives of Connectivity, Productive Work Environment and Sustainable Development. Half of the space, completed in July 2001, embodies typical, modern retrofit practices and technologies. The other half, to be completed by the summer of 2002, will incorporate state-of-the-art components and technologies, from furniture to walls, infrastructure to environmental systems and is heavily instrumented. Occupants of both floors will be monitored, along with all building systems and their infrastructure, to collect information on issues of components and systems technical performance, energy related issues, human factors, organizational and corporate productivity. Results will be published in reputable publications and shared among peers and stakeholders. This facility is intended to be dynamic and to be modified to incorporate new technologies and work practices as each experimental cycle is concluded and results published.
