SPEAKER: Wang Shi, Founder and Chairman of China Vanke, the largest residential real estate developer in the world.

Lecture Date and Time:

Wednesday September 18, 2013 12:00 PM
Building 50 Auditorium
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Chinese urbanization is moving millions of new people into cities each year. For every two homes built on the earth, one is in China. Although still developing, China already consumes half of the world's cement and steel, and is the biggest producer of carbon emissions. How can China meet its massive housing construction demand without destroying the environment?

Speaker Biography:

Wang Shi is the Founder and Chairman of China Vanke, the largest real estate enterprise in China and the largest residential real estate developer in the world. China Vanke was founded in 1988 and listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 1991 as the second listed company in China. In 2012, Vanke developed approximately 200 million square feet of housing and has an additional 400 million square feet in the development pipeline.

Vanke builds more than half of China's green buildings.

Wang sits on the board of World Wildlife Fund U.S. and the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Governance for Sustainability, focusing on forest conservation, biodiversity, and climate change. Wang is now a visiting research fellow at Harvard University specializing in business value and ethics. In 2010, Wang was named one of the 25 most influential business leaders in China by the Chinese edition of Fortune.

In 2003 and 2010 Wang summited Mt. Everest, each time breaking the Chinese age record.
