AHD: Activity Hazard Document (An EH&S authorization used to document the hazards, safety procedures and training associated with a project or activity.)
ALARA: As Low As Reasonably Achievable (Typically in reference to exposure to hazardous materials or hazards such as radiation.)
BBAP: Behavior-Based Accident Prevention Program
CATS: Corrective Action Tracking System (LBNL system to track safety findings and their resolution.)
CHSP: Chemical Hygiene and Safety Plan
CMS: Chemical Management System (On-line database of chemicals maintained by all chemical owners.)
CRADA: Cooperative Research and Development Agreements
DART: Days Away, Restricted, or Transferred Rate (Accident statistics typically reported as "cases per 200,000 hours worked". See also TRC.)
DSC: Division Safety Coordinator
EETD: Environmental Energy Technologies Division
EH&S: Environment, Health, and Safety (Department or Division)
EPA: Environmental Protection Agency
ES&H: Environment, Safety, and Health (Program)
FTP: Field Task Proposal
GLA: Generally Licensed Authorization (This is less stringent than an SSA, and is typically for sealed sources that are embedded within an apparatus.)
HEAR: Hazards, Equipment, Authorizations & Review Database (Division scope of work and inventory of hazards, equipment, and authorizations.)
HEPA: High Efficiency Particulate Air [filter]
HR: Human Resources
HWHF: Hazardous Waste Handling Facility
IFA: Integrated Functional Appraisal (Triennial technical safety reviews of each Division by the EH&S Division.)
IH: Industrial Hygiene (At LBNL, typically refers to the Industrial Hygiene group of the EH&S Division.)
IHA: Integrated Hazard Appraisal (Superseded by the HEAR database.)
ISM: Integrated Safety Management
JHQ: Job Hazard Questionnaire
LDRD: Laboratory Directed Research and Development
L/M: Line Management
LSO: Laser Safety Officer
MAWP: Maximum Allowable Working Pressure
MESH: Management Environment, Safety and Health [review] (Triennial management ES&H reviews of each Division by the SRC.)
MOU: Memorandum of Understanding (Agreement between UCB and LBNL for environment, safety and health policies and procedures applicable to the two facilities.)
MSDS: Material Safety Data Sheet
MWSSA: Mixed Waste Satellite Accumulation Area (For combination hazardous and radioactive waste. See also SAA and RWCA.)
NCAR: Nonconformance and Corrective Action Report (Commonly used for serious violations of SAA and waste handling guidelines.)
NEPA/CEQA: National Environmental Policy Act/California Environmental Quality Act
NESHAP: National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (EH&S Authorization.)
NFPA: National Fire Protection Association
OA: Operational Awareness (The program to keep DOE familiar with our operations and reduce the burden of redundant EH&S audits from DOE by involving the DOE representative in lab walkthroughs, meetings, document reviews, etc.)
OAP: Operating and Assurance Plan
OCA: Office of Contract Assurance (Provides oversight of LBNL's management systems and operating processes, including ES&H.)
OJT: On-the-Job Training
ORPS: Occurrence Reporting and Processing System (DOE program to track and analyze occurrences that have significant EH&S impacts.)
OSHA: Occupational Safety and Health Administration
OSRA: Office of Sponsored Research Activities (Work for others.)
P2R: Performance/Progress Review
PCB: Polychlorinated Biphenyl
PEL: Permissible Exposure Limit
PI: Principal Investigator
PSR: Project Safety Review (Submitted by PI's for proposed projects and annually for continuing projects.)
QA: Quality Assurance (Typically in reference to spot checks of chemical waste to make sure it matches the waste generator's description on his waste pickup requisition.)
RMA: Radiological Material Area (An area or structure where radioactive material is used, handled, or stored.)
RPG: Radiation Protection Group (Part of EH&S.)
RSA: Radiological Storage Area
RWA: Radiation Work Authorization (Issued for long-term projects involving radiological hazards.)
RWCA: Radiation Waste Collection Area (See also SSA and MWSAA.)
RWP: Radiological Work Permit (Issued for non-research, short-term projects involving radiological hazards.)
SA: Self-Assessment (Composed of: 1) annual Division SA, 2) triennial IFA, 3) triennial MESH Review, and 4) institution wide Appendix F. SA conducted by the Office of Assessment & Assurance.)
SAA: Satellite Accumulation Area (For non-radioactive hazardous waste. See also RWCA and MWSSA.)
SAAR: Supervisor Accident Analysis Report (Completed by supervisor of an injured employee.)
SAD: Safety Analysis Document (Safety authorization.)
SRC: Safety Review Committee (Lab-wide committee that reports to the Lab Director and has members from each division.)
SSA: Sealed Source Authorization (Required if sealed radioactive sources are stored or used.)
SSP: Specific Safety Procedure
STEL: Short Term Exposure Limit
TLV: Threshold Limit Value
TRC: Total Reportable Case rate (Accident statistics typically reported as "cases per 200,000 hours worked". See also LWC.)

WAA: Waste Accumulation Areas (A waste accumulation area for a large area, such as a building.)
WOW: Workers Observing Workers (Program to reduce accidents and injuries through applying the principles of behavior observation and positive feedback.)
