Performance Measurement & Verification

The DOE-funded ipMVP project supports the development and dissemination of guidelines for cost-effective measurement and verification of energy savings and related building performance characteristics, such as indoor environmental quality (IEQ). The ipMVP is the foundation for federal measurement and verification guidelines, and is also widely used in the private sector, not just in the US but in a number of other countries. Periodic updates of the ipMVP protocol reflect the latest thinking in the field, based on experience of the US and international participants and technological advances in the field of energy and IEQ measurement, data acquisition, sensor accuracy and calibration, and enterprise energy management software.

Berkeley Lab's DC office assists the US Department of Energy in periodically updating and revising the protocol through an open, consensus process involving energy service companies, energy consulting firms, researchers and educators, and other national and international organizations. Technical staff at the DC office help in coordination, evaluating users' needs, performing technical analysis, making presentations and developing training materials for M&V workshops, and identifying future needs for refining and extending the ipMVP guidance.
