Ryan Wiser is a staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He leads and conducts research in the planning, design, and evaluation of renewable energy policies, and on the costs, benefits, and market potential of renewable electricity sources. Dr. Wiser's recent analytic work has included studies on the economics of wind and solar power; the treatment of low-carbon supply options in utility resource planning; the impacts of higher penetrations of renewable energy on the electricity sector; the design of renewables portfolio standards; the risk mitigation value of renewable electricity; policy design for solar power; and customer surveys of willingness to pay for renewable energy. Through his work at Berkeley Lab, Dr. Wiser has become a well-known expert on the development and design of renewable energy policies. He regularly advises state and federal agencies on renewable energy matters; is an advisor to the Energy Foundation's China Sustainable Energy Program; is on the Corporate Advisory Board of Mineral Acquisition Partners; and serves on numerous other advisory boards. He has been a consultant to the California Energy Commission, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, the International Energy Agency, the World Bank, the Energy Foundation, the Center for Resource Solutions, and several private companies. Dr. Wiser has published over 250 journal articles and research reports. His work has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, LA Times, USA Today, Washington Post, and numerous other publications, and he has offered invited testimony to the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and the Senate Finance Committee. Prior to his employment at Berkeley Lab, Dr. Wiser worked for Hansen, McOuat, and Hamrin, Inc., the Bechtel Corporation, and the AES Corporation. He received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Stanford University and holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in Energy and Resources from the University of California, Berkeley.
