On June 29, 1998, fifteen students from Greyhills Academy High School, located in Tuba City, Arizona (Navajo Nation), spent a day with NAREEP. The students visited Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), located in the hills above the UC Berkeley campus, where NAREEP members John Busch and John Elliott provided an introduction to energy efficiency and renewable energy and their uses in Indian Country . Following the presentation, the students visited a lighting research center at LBNL that plays an important role in bringing new energy-efficient lighting technologies to market. The students then traveled to the Real Goods store in Berkeley to get hands-on experience with renewable energy technologies such as solar photovoltaic panels and wind turbines.
The students were part of a Gifted and Talented Summer enrichment program based at Greyhills Academy. The students' visit to California came after 4 weeks of exploration in environmental studies, astronomy, Navajo sciences, critical thinking, art and writing.
