Eligibility Requirements

  • All applicants must have received a Ph.D. (or equivalent) within three years of the start date (Summer-Fall 2016), or be expected to complete all doctoral degree requirements by the fellowship start date.
  • Applicants must identify a potential research mentor in ETA who will write a statement of support nominating the candidate to the selection committee. See ETA divisions and staff contacts on the Area's website (especially sidebar content).
  • The selected candidate must make a full-time, on-site commitment to the fellowship research program for a minimum of 18 months, up to the maximum of two years.
  • The successful candidate will pursue research that is aligned with ETA’s mission and research areas.

Selection Criteria and Process

Candidates will be selected based on the eligibility requirements above and the following selection criteria:

  • Quality of proposed science
  • Potential for high-impact R&D
  • Does the proposal champion scientific solutions for society's most urgent environmental problems?
  • Outstanding personal qualities: leadership, academic excellence, communication skills, publications, etc.

The selection committee will review research proposals, and consider all of the supplied materials noted in the "How to Apply" section, including a statement of support from a potential research mentor in ETA and letters of reference. One of the overriding considerations of the selection committee will be the initiative and promise demonstrated by the candidate.

The decision of the selection committee will be absolute and final. If no suitable candidate is identified, no fellowship will be awarded and the call for applications will restart in the following year's award cycle.
