Large-scale chamber facility simulating a residential environment

Large-scale chamber facility simulating a residential environment

  • Dual 50-m3 compartments housed within a conditioned building
  • Individual air handling systems with particle/gaseous contaminant filtration and inlet air temperature and flow rate control
  • Dedicated data systems, SF6 tracer-gas system for ventilation rate measurements, and ozone generator
  • Sampling equipment for gaseous and particulate pollutants including electronic mass flow controllers, and real-time particle characterization instrumentation
  • Smoking machines and cigarette-handling carousel (photo, lower left) for ETS studies
Large-scale stainless steel chamber facility

Large-scale stainless steel chamber facility

  • 20-m3 chamber constructed with low VOC-emitting materials housed within a conditioned laboratory
  • Air handling system with gas with particle/gaseous contaminant filtration and inlet air temperature, humidity and flow rate control

Small-scale chamber facility

Small-scale chamber facility

  • Small-scale stainless steel chambers housed in incubator with associated material conditioning facility
  • Clean inlet gas with temperature, humidity and flow rate control; data system and ozone generator with control
Analytical Instrumentation

Analytical Instrumentation

  • GC/MS system equipped with Chrompack CP4020 thermal desorber/concentrator for analysis of VOC sorbent tubes
  • HPLC system with diode array UV detector and dual fluorescence detectors for analysis of PAH
  • Various GCs with flame ionization, photo ionization, nitrogen/phosphorus and Thermal Energy Analyzer detectors
Integrated Organic Gas and Particle Samplers (IOGAPS) and associated sample pumps

Field Sampling and Monitoring Equipment

  • A package of personal exposure and area monitoring equipment consisting of CO monitors (Langan Products), programmable air sampling pumps modified for extended operation (Airchek 2000, SKC Inc.) and size-selective impactors (PEM, MSP Corp.).
  • Integrated Organic Gas and Particle Samplers (IOGAPS) and associated sample pumps (in photo). This artifact-free sampler designed at LBNL operates at up to 100 L min-1 and captures semi-volatile and particulate organic pollutants for quantitative gas/particle partitioning and exposure assessment.
  • An array of real-time particle characterization instrumentation including laser particle counters and aethalometers
