Specialties
Broad expertise in the economic, environmental, and technical aspects of energy-efficient end-use buildings technologies, with special emphasis on: efficient lighting; energy in laboratory-type facilities; federal energy management; energy in low-income housing; utilization of the Internet for disseminating energy information and distributed computing; advanced data visualization; energy education; energy planning and policy; non-energy benefits of energy-efficient technologies and risk management. Climate change, with emphasis on financial services sector impacts, disaster preparedness/recovery, and mitigation-adaptation synergisms.
Selected Achievements
- Member of the international body of scientists known as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which collectively shared in the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 with former U.S. Vice President Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr. "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change."
- Served as Convening Lead Author for Chapter 8 (WGII) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Third Assessment Report, chapter on climate change and the financial services sector [PDF]; also contributed to Chapter 15 on North America (WGII) [PDF] and Chapter 3 on energy efficiency (WGIII) [PDF]. In the Fourth Assessment Report, contributed to Chapter 14 on North America (WGII) [PDF].
- Co-author of Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States, a definitive US government assessment published in 2009.
- Member of core analysis team in the "Greening of the U.S. Capitol" project, developing plan to enable major Congressional facilities and operations to become carbon-neutral.
- Quantified the global problem and potential solutions for global fuel-based lighting in developing countries (published in Science).
- Authored seminal article on the insurance-loss-prevention attributes of energy-efficient and renewable energy technologies (published in Science)
- Conducted definitive study on the costs and benefits of commissioning for new and existing buildings, which included assembling the world's largest database of commissioned buildings.
- Led initial scoping study (1995) which opened up a large multi-year research effort on energy efficiency in laboratories and other "hi-tech" facilities. [PDF]
- Pioneered the field of interactive energy analysis tools for the Internet, and created one of the earliest web sites on energy efficiency and the first web-based home energy calculator. Over 4 million visitors as of mid-2007. One-third of those surveyed say they've taken action to save energy based on their experience at the site.
- Conceived and organized the 1st European Conference on Energy-Efficient Lighting, which has met every two years since 1991 (Stockholm, Arnhem, Newcastle, Copenhagen, Nice, Shanghai)
- First to comprehensively document and evaluate energy-efficient European utility lighting programs (11 countries)
- Assisted an expert group created by the Director General for Development and International Economic Cooperation of the U.N. with the preparation of a comprehensive report on renewable energy for the 1992 UNCED Earth Summit meeting
- Authored a treatise on barriers to energy efficiency in public housing that played a key role in United States legislation
- Served as advisor to the Swedish Parliament Working Group on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources
- Served as technical and script advisor for design of the Energy Pavilion (entitled "The Universe of Energy") at Disney's Epcot Center, visited by nearly 10 million people annually
- Co-founded the LBNL Applications Team, which deploys state-of-the-art energy efficiency strategies in real-world contexts
- Authored "From the Lab to the Marketplace", a "best-selling" report making the case for energy-efficiency R&D
- Authored approximately 200 publications, including 71 peer-reviewed journal articles or conference proceedings
- Frequent Popular Media Coverage, including: The Boston Globe, Business Week, CBS Radio, CNN, Discover Magazine, Financial Times, Forbes, The Huffington Post, The International Herald Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Mother Jones, National Public Radio, The New Yorker, Popular Science, Scientific American, Slate, Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and Wired.
