The aim of this project is not to create a standard for entire user interfacesthat is not feasible or desirable. Rather, the goal is to identify specific elements that can be included in an overall interface design. The types of elements we anticipate including are Terms, Symbols, Indicators, and "Operating Metaphors".
Terms are words used in user interfaces, whether printed on products, used on displays/monitors, or in manuals.

Operating Methaphors are more abstract or complex ideas, such as whether multiple delay timers operate in serial or parallel, and elements of weekly timers or occupancy sensors.

We expect the project at a minimum to propose standards for a low-power mode
term, indicator color, and symbol.
Other standard elements may emerge from the research.
