Current Status

Industry should implement the standard as it is now defined in new products. The Energy Star program strongly recommends it.
An IEEE Working Group (1621) is being formed to develop the standard content into an IEEE standard; please join us on the working group.

October, 2003 The final report of the research phase -- including eight apendices -- was posted to the project web site. The first Working Group meeting was scheduled for November 18, 2003. (see the Publications page)

January, 2003 The CEC/PIER provides funding to carry forth the standards process through IEEE 1621.

December, 2002 The Research Phase of the project was wrapped up, with the principal results of the research to be summarized in a final report. The Initial Draft of IEEE 1621 was posted to the project web site.

October, 2002 Testing of elements of the standard was conducted in September; see the Publications page for links to the results and survey instrument. The findings are consistent with the rationales that underly the user interface standard.
The final PAC meeting for the project was held on October 24. The agenda and meeting summary are on the Publications page.
September, 2002 The IEEE New Standards Committee approved creation of a working group (# 1621) to develop the User Interface Standard as an IEEE Standard on "Standard for User Interface Elements in Power Control of Electronic Devices Employed in Office/Consumer Environments". Contact Bruce Nordman, BNordman@LBL.gov to join this working group.
How to present the "hibernate" state to users remains problematic; should it be a form of sleep? of off? a fourth basic power state? and what should the indicator light do in hibernate? and is hibernate the right term to use? To help sort through the issues, a discussion of Hibernate was posted on the Publications page to help clarify the issues and help the industry work towards a consensus.
August, 2002 The recommended second half of the standard on Dynamic Behaviorwas released for comment by industry and others. See the Publications page to download it. A paper describing the standard was presented at the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE) Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings

June, 2002 A drawing and discussion of a proposed new international moon symbol was put on the Publications page.

May, 2002 We have a new logo; check the top and bottom of this web page.

April, 2002 Produced a review of issues around the crescent moon as a standard international symbol for sleep.
Held third PAC meeting: Agenda and Meeting Summary. The PAC approved the standard (five initial principles plus one on "hibernate), and provided comments on testing.
The User Interface Standard presented in a conference paper at the Microsoft Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC). The paper is also available at the WinHEC Conference web site.
The Energy Star program proposes to include the interface standard in the upcoming revision of the Monitor specification as "strongly recommended".
Dell joins the PAC.

January, 2002 Sent a memo to PAC member seeking detailed comment on the Tentative Recommendations.

December, 2001 Finished work with UC Berkeley students on testing elements of the interface standard.

August, 2001 Held second PAC meeting: Agenda and Meeting Summary

July, 2001 Produced five initial "Tentative Recommendations".
Completed a review of general User Interface Literature.
Created an interactive mockup of a PC and monitor using the initial recommendations (see the Overview page for this).

January, 2001 Critical Project Review passed successfully. Detailed data collection and literature review begins.

December, 2000 Final versions of several documents released. Project Scope and Research Topics, Updated Project Plan, and Who is involved in Power Management Controls?, the "Insitutional Review".

November, 2000 PAC meeting held at LBNL. Meeting Summary.
The PAC edited and ranked for priority and level of effort 22 separate "Topics".

October, 2000 Background material for PAC meeting made available, including posting on web. Included the Meeting Agenda, Updated Research Plan, Project Scope and Research Topics, and "Who is involved in Power Management Controls" (the Institutional Review).

September, 2000 PAC membership approved.
