Description
The Berkeley Electrochemical Research Council (BERC) will provide limited financial support for travel to technical meetings which are held in the United States. These grants are not meant to support travel which can be funded by existing research projects, but are instead awarded to allow an individual to travel to a meeting which he/she could not otherwise attend because of financial limitations. It is intended that one or two grants will be awarded each year, however the BERC selection committee may make no awards during any given period.
Application Procedure
The traveler must submit a brief application letter to Frank McLarnon [email to frmclarnon@lbl.gov; mail to Bldg. 70R0108-B, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley CA 94720; or fax to 1-510-486-4260]. The letter must include the applicant's name and contact information, the name and dates of the meeting, pertinent deadlines (abstract submission, advance registration), the title and authorship of any paper or poster which will be presented, a travel budget, and a brief statement from the cognizant Principal Investigator. Demonstration of financial need might consist of a plot showing the spending rate on the contract that supports the applicant, along with a statement that the subject travel was not included in the project budget. Note that least-cost airfare and hotel must be arranged. It is expected that most applications will be for travel to the twice-annual meetings of The Electrochemical Society, and application deadlines will be May 1 and December 1 of each year.
Selection Criteria
A committee will meet to evaluate applications. The following factors will be considered in selecting among multiple applications:
1. Demonstrated financial need.
2. Presentation of an oral or poster paper in the area of electrochemical science and technology.
3. Preference will be given to applicants who are members of BERC research groups, however anyone can apply.
4. Preferred applicants (listed in decreasing priority order) are graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, research associates, retirees, junior scientists, and undergraduate students. No grants will be given to staff scientists or faculty.
5. No grants will be awarded for travel to meetings in California or Hawaii.
